Brenda Commins Obituary

HUDSON, OHIO — Brenda “Bonnie” Commins (Stone) died peacefully on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the age of 81.

Brenda, born March 15,1940 in Cleveland, and lived a happy and wonderful life. She grew up in Cleveland Heights with her parents, David (Stone) and Lillian (Bernstein) Stone, her brother, Howard Stone, and sister Serene (Miller). After graduating from The Cleveland Heights High School, she studied at the Ohio State University and later she met the love of her life, Stanley Commins. Brenda and Stanley married in 1963 and raised their two children Phillip and Joel in Warren, Ohio.

Brenda was passionate about helping others and throughout her life she was active in several service organizations. As a dedicated volunteer, she was an active member at the Beth Israel Temple Center and the Jewish Community Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Brenda was deeply involved with Beth Israel Temple in Warren, Ohio sitting on many committees. Brenda was active in volunteering for American Red Cross for over 50 years, giving blood donations and assisting the elderly in transportation to daily life events.

Brenda was in bookkeeping/accounting in the retail industry for over 30 years. Stanley and Brenda met while working in her early years for her Uncle Ben (Bernstein) and Marty (brother in-law and Norma Cohen (Commins) (Stanley’s sister).

Brenda never passed up an opportunity to play Mah Jong with her friends, swim at the Elks Club (Warren) and the Jewish Community Center (Youngstown), but Stanley was the love of her life. They spent decades years together traveling, raising their family, hosting fabulous parties and being the center of the extended family for holidays. Brenda loved to cook and dote on her son’s friends (Phillip and Joel) and her granddaughter (Olivia) who affectionately called her “Brenda Love and Grandma Brenda.” Brenda's love of the theatre, performing arts and music was passed to Phillip as he practices this great tradition in his daily life. She additionally was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers as she became a fan due to Joel’s love of football.

Brenda will be missed by her sister, Serene Miller; Howard Stone (preceded in death), her children, Phillip and Joel Commins; granddaughter, Olivia Commins; cousins Marcee Maupin (Miller), Marc Miller, Ellen Goodworth (Cohen), Shari Cohen, and Sharon Kripke (Cohen).

A service will be held graveside in the Beth Israel Cemetery adjacent to the section of Pine Knoll Cemetery, 3358-3412 Hewitt Gifford Road SW., Warren, Ohio 44481 Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 11:30 am. Following the service, Brenda’s family will welcome well-wishers at the Mocha House 467 High Street NE, Warren, Ohio 44481.

The family will sit shiva at the American Legion Post 331, Ravenna, Ohio 44266 on Tuesday Dec. 7, 2021 and Wednesday, December 8, 2021, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests contributions, in memory of Brenda, be made to the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Center, Jewish Family and Community Services
