Dr Mark B Shapira, of Fairhaven passed away from illness on 10/31/2021 at the age of 74.
Mark Benjamin Simon Shapira was born in 1947 in Birmingham, England, to Dr Elsa Katzburg Shapira Bloomberg and Dr David Shapira. He grew up in Old Town and Bangor, Maine and in Youngstown, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from The Ohio State University. He spent a year at The Ohio State University, Department of Physiology, teaching Introductory to Human Physiology, before continuing to The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1974.
For 46 years, Dr Shapira owned a private pediatric practice and was beloved by all his patients. He was known as a compassionate, caring pediatrician that put his patients’ needs before his own.
Mark was past vice chairman and previous Chief of Pediatrics of St Luke’s Hospital Department of Pediatrics. He was an active member of the Pediatric Physician’s Organization at Children’s Hospital Boston and belonged to the Massachusetts Medical Society.
Mark loved to spend time on his boat and caring for his beautiful roses.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Olivia Botelho of New Bedford; daughter, Elizabeth Shapira of Dartmouth; sister, Ruth Shapira Aharoni of Israel; brother Daniel Shapira of Niles, Ohio; two nieces Inbal Aharoni, and Yeru Chernilovsky, and grandnephew and grandniece Eli and Eden Chernilovsky, all of Israel; and a nephew Kahal Aharoni of Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service will take place on November 14, 2021 1:00 pm at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, New Bedford, MA. Burial will be at Noon, Sunday, November 7, 2021 in Ohev Tzedek-Shaarei Torah Cemetery, Youngstown, Ohio.
