Unexpectedly and sadly, Stanley Simon passed away on Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 15, 1943. Stanley delighted all those around him from his very beginning. His wonderful stories, his engaging personality, his ability to make friends and care for them never faltered. The son of Irving Simon and Henrietta Wapnick Simon, he attended James Madison High School and was a member of the track team.
Like his father and uncles, he became immersed in the garment business in New York both as a rep and as an owner/manufacturer of various enterprises including Jean Lutèce and Hang10. Well-known and respected throughout the industry, his clothing lines were well represented in the major department stores across the country.
After retiring from the industry, he spent a few years in the southeast coast of Florida before relocating to Youngstown to operate The Shop Downtown in the Phar-Mor Center at 20 Federal Plaza West. Known as ‘Stan the Man’, he created an atmosphere of congeniality for those who frequented the ‘Shop’ making it a regular stop for many.
An avid film aficionado, Stanley enjoyed and treasured old film classics, remembering movies in great detail and often quoting lines. As a football enthusiast, he had a regular group on his phones during the games, cheering, critiquing and correcting the plays.
His philosophy of life was benevolence; his method was fortitude; his credo was humility.
He is survived by his sister, Brenda Lewis; nephew, Scott Lewis; nieces Renee and Janna Lewis; grandnephews Dax (Daniel) Penney and Leonardo Lewis and grandniece, Julia Lewis.
Graveside funeral service will be held at Tod Homestead Cemetery on Friday, August 23rd at 2pm.
